LAUNCH: WeDesignChange.org

Posted at 4:57 PM on October 22nd, 2008 by Alex

Today is a pretty big day.

Why?  Because I’m launching my first non-profit project: We Design Change

After being involved in Blog Action Day 2008, I became pretty inspired by the huge levels of cooperation, networking, and just plain creativity throughout the blogosphere, but ESPECIALLY throughout the design communnity.  We banded together over Twitter, we networked to keep our stories popular, we used our design skills to draw tons of attention to big issues, and we made our corners of the world look beautiful.

After seeing this awesome potential within the design community, I thought to myself that this HAS to be tapped and our efforts combined more often.  We Design Change is the result of that realization.

B.A.D. Challenge donation: $123!

Posted at 4:15 PM on October 22nd, 2008 by Alex

Remember that Blog Action Day Challenge?  Well, Congrats: it came out to $123!

Sorry it’s taken so long to get the totals!  I’ve been having some issues getting the true numbers for my RSS subscribers and new Twitter followers.  It turns out FeedReader doesn’t keep any sort of accurate RSS reader totals — just a number that bounces depending on access to the feed.  So, to correct for that, I’m going to take the HIGHEST RSS subscriber total I’ve seen in the last week (51) and use that.

So, here’s what the breakdown looks like:

  • TOTAL RSS Subscribers: 51
  • NEW Twitter Followers:  (current [133] - starting [61]) =  72
  • Total money to donate: $123
Congratulations.  This is your donation as much as mine.  A big shout out to all the new followers and subscribers that made this happen!

I’ll be writing the check and handing it over to the Hillsdale County Salvation Army branch in the next couple days.  I’ll try to get some pictures or videos to put up here when I do :)

FINALLY, I was so inspired by Blog Action Day I’ve been working on a little (ok, actually it is really BIG) side project.  Stay tuned: I’ll be inmasking it in my next post (later today).

Thanks again!

Inspired #5: HDR Pt3 - Portraits

Posted at 1:34 AM on October 19th, 2008 by Alex

This post is part of an ongoing series at That INDIE Dude called “Inspired”.  True creativity and originality demand true inspiration.  The point of this series is to help readers find new and fresh areas of inspiration in their lives, so as to help them find their most creative and original selves.

HDR Photography: 62 Incredibly Expressive Portraits.

If you missed them, be sure to start out with the first two parts of the HDR series:

  1. 50 Amazing HDR Pics from Flickr
  2. 55 Amazing HDR Pictures from Picasa
Part 3, is going to stray a little bit from the rest.  I thought about doing HDR from all other sources around the ‘net, but then realized that one of my favorite online art communities, DeviantART, actually has MORE unbelievable HDR pics than Picasa and Flickr.  So, for fear of boring everyone with just another 50 awesome pics from DeviantArt, I decided to focus this post on one of my favorite applications of HDR: Portraits!

While HDR is everywhere now-a-days, it seems to be over-run by a few general uses: buildings, landscapes (including water), and cars/shiny surfaces.  These are all great, but it gets a little repetitive sometimes.  One place, though, that I’ve been particularly interested in the application of HDR, is portrait photography.  If we really can count on creative HDR use presenting an image with more expression than a regular photograph - why not apply it to the ultimate expressive-engine: the human face?

I’ve been messing around with HDR portrait photography for a while now, and I’m addicted.  I have to say: it is DEFINITELY one of the hardest applications of HDR, but when it works out you get some of the most incredible portraits out there.  So, without further ado, hit the jump below to see 62 INCREDIBLE HDR portraits found on Deviant Art.
