Inspired #5: HDR Pt3 - Portraits

Posted at 1:34 AM on October 19th, 2008 by Alex

This post is part of an ongoing series at That INDIE Dude called “Inspired”.  True creativity and originality demand true inspiration.  The point of this series is to help readers find new and fresh areas of inspiration in their lives, so as to help them find their most creative and original selves.

HDR Photography: 62 Incredibly Expressive Portraits.

If you missed them, be sure to start out with the first two parts of the HDR series:

  1. 50 Amazing HDR Pics from Flickr
  2. 55 Amazing HDR Pictures from Picasa
Part 3, is going to stray a little bit from the rest.  I thought about doing HDR from all other sources around the ‘net, but then realized that one of my favorite online art communities, DeviantART, actually has MORE unbelievable HDR pics than Picasa and Flickr.  So, for fear of boring everyone with just another 50 awesome pics from DeviantArt, I decided to focus this post on one of my favorite applications of HDR: Portraits!

While HDR is everywhere now-a-days, it seems to be over-run by a few general uses: buildings, landscapes (including water), and cars/shiny surfaces.  These are all great, but it gets a little repetitive sometimes.  One place, though, that I’ve been particularly interested in the application of HDR, is portrait photography.  If we really can count on creative HDR use presenting an image with more expression than a regular photograph - why not apply it to the ultimate expressive-engine: the human face?

I’ve been messing around with HDR portrait photography for a while now, and I’m addicted.  I have to say: it is DEFINITELY one of the hardest applications of HDR, but when it works out you get some of the most incredible portraits out there.  So, without further ado, hit the jump below to see 62 INCREDIBLE HDR portraits found on Deviant Art.

HDR Photography: 55 Amazing HDR Pictures from Picasa.

If you missed the intro and Flickr roundup, start off with this post 50 Amazing HDR Pics from Flickr.

This week I present to you part TWO of the HDR photography inspiraration series: 55 Amazing HDR Pictures found on Picasa!  If you’re like most out there, you probably haven’t seen many of these (since photos photos from Google’s Picasa never seem to make it into the spotlight like Flickr).  That doesn’t mean they should be overlooked though!  With some help from the T.I.D. community, I was able to pick out 55 gorgeous photos without too much hassle.  I cheated a little bit too, and included 5 of my own pictures.  Can you figure out which ones they are without clicking?

Check ALL of these awesome shots out below the jump!  And don’t forget to click the pics for links to the picasa page and more work from these awesome photographers.

Inspired #3: HDR Photos: Flickr

HDR Photography.

HDR (High Dynamic Range) Photography has been huge on the web for a couple years now.  The idea is to combine the highlight details from under-exposed shots with the shadow details from over-exposed shots into a single image, in the process more accurately displaying the world that we see with our eyes.  The result is something ofter earily realistic, dramatic, and at the same time synthetic.

Personally, I’ve been dabbling in HDR for about 6 months now, and use it almost exclusively for my photography.  The reason?  I decided a while ago that photo realism isn’t necessarily the “most real”.  I want my photography to show the world as I see it — not as my camera sees it.  So with every shot I apply heaps of HDR processing and effects.  I haven’t quite got my photos to the point of inspiring the same emotional response I had when actually there and taking them, but they are a lot closer than the untouched shots :)  Maybe its just because I’m a crummy photographer, but I’m absolutely in love with HDR, and I hope this gallery inspires you in the same way!

Interested in getting into HDR?  It’s a time consuming under-taking, but totally worth it if you like what you see here.  I’ll follow up in a couple days with a new “Resources” post dedicated to doing HDR photography yourself.

This is going to be a 3 round series.  Round 1 is 50 awesome HDR images found on Flickr.  Next round will be images from Picasa, and the last round will be “everywhere else”.  As always, click the pic for a link to the photo on Flickr and more from each artist.  ENJOY!
